After seven days the judge of urgent matters moved them into Animals Lebanon's care to stop their days of suffering in such horrendous conditions.

The offices of Customs and Lebanon CITES Management Authority have issued statements that this shipment did not comply with IATA or CITES, an international convention that Lebanon is a Party to.

The crate arrived with no markings whatsoever and without any documentation. In no way did the crate or shipment meet the requirements of IATA Live Animal Regulations, and the permits should be considered invalid.

They were born at a zoo in Ukraine and traded to a wildlife dealer. The importer has already had a dying lion confiscated from his pet shop.

This case was so shocking it made headlines around the world.

So much work has been done recently in Lebanon to improve animal welfare and stop the trafficking of wildlife. Only months ago the Ministry of Agriculture and Animals Lebanon launched the Last Chance for Big Cats campaign - specifically because the trafficking and keeping of lions, tigers and other big cats is a serious and growing concern.

We urge the Judiciary to stop these endangered animals from ending up in the black market and instead allow them to be sent to a wildlife sanctuary.
