Good news for Southern Resident Orcas and wild Snake River Salmon, Hapag-Lloyd, a large German based shipping company, has discontinued doing business with the Port of Portland. This effects 90% of Lewiston, Idaho's container traffic which is now on indefinite hold. Lewiston is the Port City above the four lower Snake River dams. The steep decline in barging crops utilizing the locks on the Snake River dams have made them virtually obsolete. This will not effect the economy of Washington, Idaho or Oregon, for there are many other options farmers have been using in transporting their goods to sea including truck and rail. This and revised economic data on the feasibility of keeping the dams versus breaching them has led experts to agree that the time has long since past to demolish the four lower Snake River Dams and open up 5500 miles of prime salmon rearing habitat and wilderness in the high elevations of Idaho, the most climate-change resilient salmon and steelhead habitat in the lower 48 states. The Snake River dam removal issue is no longer impractical, it is merely political. We need to give politicians in Washington more backing in favor of the issue.
