Repeal the Electoral College

The Issue

As an American, I ask for the repeal of the Electoral College , as it concerns all American’s right to vote. The Electoral College does not accurately and efficiently represent many Americans actual opinions. Four times in American history has the presidential candidate with less votes than their opposition been elected President of the United States via the Electoral College. The usage of the winner take all system which is present in most states allows the opinion of a large amount of voters to go unheard and ignored. It is almost as if their votes and opinions did not matter. The candidate with the most votes then takes all of the electoral votes without proportion making it almost as if there was no other candidate. It is inherently wrong that the voice of a large amount of voters go unheard and have no effect whatsoever. The Electoral College acts thus as a vehicle for granting a voice to some and denies a voice to others. The Electoral College therefore goes against many of the principles of American Democracy, or at least the principle that people deserve the right to be represented adequately.

For these reasons I cannot condone the usage of the Electoral College. It is equivocally un-American. Therefore, I think that the Electoral College system should be either removed or changed in such a way that it incorporates the voices of all Americans. I would like you to act and advocate for the removal of the Electoral College as it stands against the values of being American, equal representation for all.
