Stop NC Senator Dan Bishop from legislating away free political speech in NC
0 have signed. Let’s get to 2,500.
We protest Republican State Senator Dan Bishop's call to introduce a bill in the NC State Legislature that would "make it a crime to threaten, intimidate, or retaliate against a present or former North Carolina official in the course of, or on account of, the performance of his or her duties." He proposed this after protestors followed former NC Governor McCrory at the Women's March in Washington D.C. chanting "Shame, shame, shame" for his support of the notorious anti-LGBTQ law known as House Bill 2.
Are we really at the point in the crumbling of our Democracy in which the right to free speech exercised by protestors is criminalized, while the right to bear any sort of automatic gun is legal? Is the word "shame" more feared by a Republican ex-Governor than a bullet?
The citizens in Washington D.C. last week protesting former Governor Pat McCrory were exercising their constitutionally-protected right to freedom of expression. To criminalize such expression by characterizing it as "retaliation" or "intimidation" is not only unconstitutional, it also has the ugly appearance of a bold effort of the NC GOP to subvert our democratic political process and strip the people of their ability to hold elected officials to account.
Dan Bishop's duties as NC Senator are to "support the Constitution and laws of the United States and the Constitution of the State of North Carolina". In accordance with the oath he has taken, and the Constitutions he has sworn to uphold, we petition Senator Dan Bishop to desist from introducing any legislation that would criminalize free speech in the State of North Carolina.
