Support Bill S.249: An Act to Involve Youth in Civic Engagement
The Issue
With civic education failing to be seen as a priority for public school education, students are unable to access resources available to them to exercise their civic engagement and efficacy within their communities. This disengagement directly affects federal elections- In 2014 there was the lowest youth voter turnout in 40 years, with only 19.9% of youth aged 18-29 voting in the federal elections
Bill S. 249 calls upon the Department of Youth and Secondary Education to create a model civics curriculum for the 2015-2016 school year and requires that all public school districts offer a unit on civic education, with a focus on voter registration.
This will increase youth involvement in the political process and create a more educated electorate. Please help us give Massachusetts youth the education and tools they need to be effective, informed citizens!
