The Issue

Hi, my name is Kaylee Kirkpatrick, and I am currently a senior at Basehor Linwood HS. I am currently the president of our school's FCCLA (school organization) Chapter. Every year, we compete in events called 'STAR Events,' and my personal event is titled "Public Policy Advocate."

My goal is to positively influence a bill/law and create a change through advocacy, awareness, and education.

Senate Bill 133 would create a new crime: “unlawful storage of a firearm” when a gun is not secured, and a minor:
A) accesses it, or
B) uses it to cause bodily harm, or
C) uses it to cause great bodily harm/death.

Penalties range from a misdemeanor to felonies, depending on the outcome.
It also lists defenses/exceptions (e.g., firearm in immediate control of the owner, minor unlawfully entered, lawful self-defense, etc.).

This year, my family and I experienced a life-changing loss. My cousin was unfortunately shot and passed away in January. This sparked my idea for this topic and allowed me to research and learn more about how laws can help end gun violence, without becoming unconstitutional.

Please sign in hopes of raising awareness, education, and safety in our communities. #LLA #Endgunviolence

Note: It is important to understand the law before signing, share your honest opinion.
