The voters of Bar Harbor voted down Article 13, an effort to put common sense controls on cruise ships in Frenchman Bay. It was a sad result. We will continue to fight for our beautiful Bay. Here's the letter we just got from Friends of Frenchman Bay:
"Dear Friends,
The citizen's initiative, Article 13, lost in Bar Harbor yesterday. The threat by the State of Maine not to sell the land to Bar Harbor if 13 passed, may have been significant in the minds of some voters, even though this threat by the State quite clearly outlines the behind -the-scenes intentions to build a Mega Pier.
Article 12, the spot zoning article which allows dense development and a pier with no size limits, written with the cruise ship company's interests in mind, with the help of the consultant Bermello Ajamil and Partners ( who builds mega piers all over the world), passed.
We are not going away, and believe more than ever that the ecosystems of our Bay and the National Park are under threat and need protection.
We will be fighting any large scale pier in all ways possible as the future unfolds. Through your support and activism we have raised awareness in people near and far who love this area.Thank you all for your efforts and donations- More than 50 individuals sent contributions to help us with our education campaign and outreach efforts. Any money left over will be used in the legal fight going forward.
Please use these next few days to be outside if you can, enjoy the natural world, and recharge. Then we can move forward, in the near term, by continuing our Letters to the Editors of local papers regarding our concerns about Mega Pier development in Frenchman Bay.
Another thing to be documenting (and calling the FAA about) are any low flyovers by helicopter tours that are bothering humans or sea creatures - the sign"Heli Tours" has gone up in Trenton. The law states a tour can fly at 500 feet over land, and there is no lower limit over the water, but we must report activities that threaten wildlife, boaters, or our peace in our homes or yards.
With Solidarity,
Pamela McCullough and Renata Moise"
