Julia Squitteri started this petition to Seminole County Public Schools

As students in Seminole County Schools, we see the detrimental impact of a sexist dress code almost every day in school and are fully committed to reforming it to create a more inclusive learning environment for all students, regardless of gender. The dress code policies of Seminole County Public Schools reinforce sex stereotypes that result in a toxic learning environment for many female students by selectively enforcing them against female students, violating Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. They specifically prohibit predominately female worn articles of clothing such as “halter tops, tube tops, backless dresses/tops, spaghetti straps, and tank tops,” as well as banning any show of cleavage (SCPS dress code). Female students are frequently forced to miss valuable class time due to dress code enforcement, unlike their male classmates, violating the Florida Educational Equity Act on grounds of exclusion on the basis of gender.

By signing this petition you are helping us propose a reformed dress code that eliminates the sexist, discriminatory, and toxic dress code policy currently plaguing Seminole County Public Schools.

- Organized by SCPS students with the Ruth Project, an organization for gender equity change.
