He was also the Grand Dragon of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan and a Confederate General who fought to protect slavery. Fifty years ago marches over this bridge led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and today the bridge is a symbol of nonviolent victory for change and civil rights. A landmark that holds so much significance for the civil rights movement shouldn’t also be a symbol of hate.
