Dear All The petition is still growing fast - we know that the number of signatures matter, so please, keep on sharing in your networks so we can burst through the 10,000 barrier this weekend! We are meeting outside Selfridges at 9.30 tomorrow to promote the petition among shoppers, please join us if you can - people are bringing placards, and probably pillows for the spikes! People have been emailing Selfridges, and have then been angered by their standard reply which insists that it is all about litter and smoking. Many people have then been writing back. Let me share what Nick from Didsbury said: 'perhaps Mr Kelly has not fully understood the essence of what it is about the placement of the studs that many people find so abhorrent..Your email explains that the purpose of the studs is to deter litter and smoking.The studs achieve their deterrent effect by providing a surface that would cause discomfort (ie pain) to any person who was minded to sit on them, intentionally or accidently..there are other options that would achieve a similar outcome..for instance a sloped surface. An approach of this sort would have avoided the public relations issues you are now having to deal with. Another concern is where this stops..it sets a precedent..before long studs become a common feature across Manchester. This is not in my vision for a future Manchester and I know many others share this point of view. One final point..the people of Manchester will not give up their fight to have these studs removed..Manchester has a long history of campaigning and people are immensely proud of this'. Go Nick!
