Create an NHS pathway of treatment for children and adults diagnosed with Selective Mutism

The Issue

Across the UK different counties are offering treatment, or not, for selective mutism.

Selective Mutism is a high anxiety disorder which causes someone to freeze in fear when spoken to or be expected to speak. For more information please visit SMIRA - Selective Mutism Information and Resource Association.

Without treatment families can feel confused and isolated. For us, we were discharged on diagnosis and had to use our savings to pay for private Care.  I know we are not alone.

This needs to change. There needs to be an equal standardised pathway of care for all regardless of where you live.

If we win we hope to see pathways and care invested in, and see support for those with this condition. Help for those who are isolated and unable to thrive due to Selective mutism.  Ideally help would be a professional liasing with family and school, ensuring key techniques are used and both parties are working together to support the child, unfortunately this is not always the case. Help would also be support for a child or adult with sm to access the community, and to offer the child/adult counselling in the form of therapies, cbt, counselling.
