The Issue

We are calling for justice for the small black cat who died in the case of Miguel Perez. Prosecutors allege that Perez threw his family cat from a 15th-story window after the cat scratched him, causing him to die upon impact. This was not an accident- the allegations describe an intentional act of violence against a defenseless animal in response to normal animal behavior. We urge the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office to prosecute this case to the fullest extent supported by the evidence and law and to seek meaningful consequences if Perez is convicted. Animal cruelty must be taken seriously, and this case is an opportunity to make clear that the lives and suffering of animals matter under our justice system.

Why Your Signature Matters

This case is The People  v. Miguel Perez. The People. That means us. The justice system prosecutes this case in the name of the public, and our voices deserve to be heard. By signing this petition, you are showing the court and prosecutors that members of the public take violence against animals seriously and want meaningful accountability when our animal protection laws are violated. If this case is being pursued in the name of the People, then let’s make sure they know what the people are asking for: justice for Shadow and consequences that reflect the seriousness of his death.

  • Court Update: The case is currently moving toward a possible Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) resolution, which could allow Perez to avoid jail time by completing court-ordered programming or other requirements. The case is still ongoing, and no final resolution has been reached. This development makes continued public attention especially important as we advocate for an outcome that reflects the seriousness of the alleged cruelty and provides meaningful accountability.

Our goal

To present this petition to the Bronx District Attorney’s Office to demonstrate the level of public concern surrounding this case and to urge prosecutors to treat the alleged animal cruelty with the seriousness it deserves. The more signatures we collect, the stronger the demonstration of public concern and support for meaningful accountability in this case.
