Lyle and Erik Menendez have been in prison for over three decades since 1990, a length of time that obscures the possibility of reform and rehabilitation. The worldwide and Canadian community question the justice and fairness of this prolonged period, in comparison with the average 15-year sentence for similar crimes. We recognize the need for justice, but we believe it is time for empathy to take the lead. It's time to reconsider the case of the Menendez brothers who, like all prisoners, deserve an opportunity to reintegrate into society, live productively, and enjoy the warmth of family life. By continuing to incarcerate them excessively, we fail our principles of human rights, candid justice, and forgiveness. We call upon the judicial authorities to review their prolonged imprisonment.
