The Issue
On May 3rd, 2023, Adam Fresquez was maced and shot twice in his back in Edgewater, Colorado, leaving the Fresquez family and our community devastated. As concerned citizens, we demand justice for Adam. We call upon the Edgewater Police Department and District Attorney Alexis King to take immediate action and charge the person responsible for murdering Adam.
Adam's untimely death has left a void that can never be filled. He was a young and loving father of two, a wonderful husband, and a beloved son and brother. At just 33 years old, his life was cut short by an act of violence that has shaken our entire community.
Unfortunately, we have serious concerns about the handling of this case by the Edgewater Police Department. This is not an isolated incident; there is a long history of corruption within their ranks that cannot be ignored. District Attorney Alexis King acknowledged the depth of the corruption herself when she submitted a formal request to Attorney General Phil Weiser to open a “pattern and practice" investigation into the Edgewater Police Department after alleged misconduct. According to the request, investigators found instances of evidence being destroyed, citizens constitutional rights being violated and the investigation revealed “an internal culture fraught with bullying, retaliation, and bending of the rules.”
It has been over four months since Adam's murder occurred, yet no charges have been brought against his killer. The person who shot Adam in the back allegedly claimed self-defense, was questioned and released almost immediately, and has yet to be charged with any crime. The lack of transparency and progress in this investigation raises serious doubts about whether Edgewater Police truly value Adam's life or their commitment to serving justice on behalf of our community.
We understand that investigations take time; however, it is crucial for law enforcement agencies to communicate openly with the public during such sensitive cases. Transparency builds trust between communities and those entrusted with upholding justice and it is a critical component to public safety.
Therefore, we urge District Attorney Alexis King to intervene immediately and ensure that all necessary resources are allocated towards expediting this investigation without compromising its integrity. We demand answers as to why there has been such delay in charging Adam's shooter.
