The Issue

In the heart of our Jamaican communities, our nights are filled with darkness, not just due to the natural setting of the sun, but due to the lack of proper street lighting. This is more than a mere inconvenience—it's a threat to our safety. Many of us walk home from late-night shifts, return from school events, or simply step out to meet friends and family, only to traverse streets shrouded in near-complete darkness.

For too long, neighborhoods across Jamaica have suffered because of insufficient or malfunctioning streetlights. Some areas remain void of any lighting, while others are plagued with outdated and non-functional bulbs. This glaring oversight has amplified concerns over security, with residents fearing the shadows where crime might thrive unseen and unchecked. Furthermore, poorly lit streets increase the risk of accidents and injuries, affecting both pedestrians and drivers alike.

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) holds the responsibility of ensuring our streets are lit. Despite this duty, delays in installing new lights and repairing defective ones continue, leaving our communities vulnerable at night. It is time for immediate action. We are demanding that JPS expedite the process of streetlight installations and prioritize the repair and maintenance of existing infrastructure.

According to the Jamaica Crime Observatory, areas without adequate lighting witness a higher incidence of crimes compared to those well-lit. It's not just statistics, but lived experiences confirm this harsh reality. Reports from the Office of the Commissioner of Police also correlate improved lighting with heightened community safety and reduced illegal activities.

Therefore, we urge our local authorities and JPS to adopt a proactive stance. Allocate the necessary resources for the immediate installation of new streetlights where none exist and ensure rapid repairs to all malfunctioning units.

By signing this petition, you support a safer and more secure environment for all Jamaicans. Our voices, unified, have the power to illuminate our streets and our lives. Let us not wait for another incident to highlight the desperate need for change. Urge JPS and our governing bodies to take action now by signing and sharing this petition. Together, we can light up the night and create safer streets for all.
