In the short span of just 76 days since the school year began, Tres Rios Academy has experienced no less than three lock-down incidents, one of which involved a direct threat of harm to our students. As a parent at this school, I cannot help but feel an overwhelming urgency to ensure the safety and well-being of our children. These frightening episodes are a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities our students face when proper security measures are not in place.

Given the gravity of these incidents, it is imperative that we advocate for the deployment of a full-time School Resource Officer (SRO) at Tres Rios Academy. According to the National Association of School Resource Officers, schools with an SRO on campus experience a notable decrease in violent incidents and an improved sense of safety among students, staff, and parents.

An SRO not only acts as a deterrent to those who might harm our children but also serves as a positive role model and mentor within the educational environment. Their presence can help foster a safe and supportive atmosphere, where students can focus on learning without fear.

We call on the local educational authorities and the governing school district to prioritize the allocation of resources needed to hire a dedicated SRO for our school. By making this commitment, they will demonstrate that the safety of our students is paramount, and that our community stands united in its desire to protect them.
