The Issue

We, the undersigned residents and supporters of Stowmarket, are calling for immediate action to safeguard the Recreation Ground from repeated unauthorised encampments that have disrupted the safe and fair use of this vital public space.

Over the past three months, our community has faced:

• Vehicles being driven at speed across open fields and near children’s play equipment
• Unauthorised vehicle access through pedestrian walkways and footpaths
• Increasing levels of dog and human waste left behind
• Intimidation and harassment of local residents
• Disruption to access, enjoyment, and scheduled community use of the site

This cherished space belongs to everyone. It plays a critical role in the wellbeing of residents — especially families, children, and those without private gardens. Without timely intervention, the current pattern will continue to pose risks to public health, safety, and community cohesion.

We respectfully request that Stowmarket Town Council and Mid Suffolk District Council work together to:

1. Remove the current encampment and restore access for public use
2. Install temporary deterrents, such as concrete bollards at key vehicle access points
3. Commit to permanent protective infrastructure such as low-height estate-style fencing, gated access points
4. Clarify plans for lawful, humane transit site provision that supports travelling communities appropriately
5. Ensure public safety obligations under Martyn’s Law are being met, including assessment of risks associated with events and open spaces

This petition is a call not for division, but for practical solutions that respect all stakeholders while protecting shared community assets.

Together, we ask for fair, visible, and effective action.

These are available to hire at £5.50 + VAT each per week,

so for temporary protective measures, until such a point that the protective fencing can be installed
