Secure Royalties for Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries

The Issue

To the Nunatsiavut, Provincial and Federal Governments,

We, the beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement, urge you to ensure that we receive our rightful royalties and benefits from the Voisey's Bay project and other Impact Benefit Agreements (IBAs).
As Inuit beneficiaries, we believe that our land, resources, and heritage are being utilized for economic gain without adequate benefits and compensation reaching our communities. We demand:
Transparency and accountability in the management of IBA funds and royalties.
Fair and equitable distribution of benefits to all beneficiaries.
Regular updates and consultations on IBA negotiations and implementation.
We call upon our leaders to prioritize our interests and work towards securing our rightful benefits from these projects. We deserve to see tangible benefits and improvements in our communities.

Nunatsiavut, home to the Inuit region in northern Labrador, Canada, is rich in natural resources. Despite these abundant resources, many Nunatsiavut beneficiaries do not receive fair compensation in the form of royalties. It is of utmost importance that the rightful owners of these resources are paid their due share to improve their well-being and prosperity.

Historically, Nunatsiavut has faced challenges including limited economic opportunities and social inequalities. The lack of royalties exacerbates these issues, leaving communities with insufficient funds to invest in healthcare, education, and essential infrastructure. These revenues are critical in fostering sustainable development and improving the overall quality of life for Inuit.

Moreover, indigenous communities, like those in Nunatsiavut, have a right to benefit from the natural resources extracted from their lands. Federal and provincial governments have expressed a commitment to reconciliation, yet by failing to ensure that royalties flow to the Nunatsiavut beneficiaries, they are falling short of this promise.

An actionable solution is for government bodies to enact policies that guarantee a fixed percentage of royalties from any mining, fishing, or other industrial activities on these lands be shared with the Nunatsiavut beneficiaries. Establishing a transparent and equitable system for how these royalties are managed and distributed is crucial.

Supporting this petition means standing with the Nunatsiavut beneficiaries in their fight for rightful compensation. It reinforces the importance of recognizing their inherent rights and addressing the socio-economic challenges they face. Sign this petition to advocate for a fair distribution of wealth and improved living conditions for the Nunatsiavut communities.

Signed,
Craig Blake and fellow Nunatsiavut beneficiaries
