Secure Our Schools Now: A Call for Metal Detectors in KUSD

Secure Our Schools Now: A Call for Metal Detectors in KUSD
The Issue
Our children and school staff deserve better protection.
Within the Kenosha Unified School District (KUSD), many schools still rely on a simple buzzer system for entry. A visitor rings a bell, and the door is unlocked from the office. This system leaves a serious and dangerous gap in security. What is stopping someone with harmful intent from gaining access, harming office staff, and then reaching our children?
In today’s world, this risk cannot be ignored. Incidents involving weapons in schools are becoming far too common, including students bringing guns and knives onto campus. Yet, many public places—such as bars and event venues—require metal detectors and trained security personnel. If these measures are considered necessary to protect adults in public spaces, why are we not providing the same level of protection for our children?
We are calling on the Kenosha Unified School District and local leaders to implement enhanced security measures in all KUSD schools, including metal detectors and improved on-site security. Proactive safety measures can save lives. Our children, educators, and school staff deserve to feel safe every day they walk through the doors.
Safety should never be optional—especially when it comes to our kids.
