The Issue

For over a decade, compassionate individuals in St. Bernard Parish have devoted their time and resources to caring for feral cats abandoned without a second thought. These cats have often been left behind, many dumped unceremoniously, including some from the local St. Bernard Parish shelter. Their gracious protectors have acted where nobody else wanted to, ensuring these vulnerable animals were fed, sheltered, and cared for.

However, this sanctuary, affectionately known as Kitty City, now faces an existential threat—a new sports facility is set to be constructed on the very grounds where these cats have roamed, rendering the decades-long care efforts on the verge of collapse. The decision has been abrupt; caretakers have been given a mere 45 days to relocate the feral cat colonies they have tirelessly supported for so long.

We urge the local government to step in and allocate a parcel of land for a permanent feral cat sanctuary within the parish. This new sanctuary would serve not only as a haven for existing colonies but as a safe space for other abandoned cats throughout the parish.

The establishment of a dedicated cat sanctuary is a practical solution with countless benefits. It will provide essential care and medical support, spay and neuter programs, and protect the local biodiversity by managing the cat population effectively.

Countries and regions worldwide have recognized the benefits of managing feral cat populations through humane means—a strategy that includes dedicated spaces and ongoing community support and education. The same can be achieved here, and it requires a modest step of land allocation—land that could transform lives and uphold a compassionate legacy in our community.

Without immediate action, countless cats face uncertain futures, and the compassionate efforts over the last ten years will be undone. This is an urgent appeal to the leaders of St. Bernard Parish to safeguard the goodness that has been fostered for so long. Please show your support for this cause.

Sign this petition to demand land for a feral cat sanctuary and protect the helpless creatures we have nurtured for years. Together, let’s make sure our community chooses compassion over neglect.
