Secure Justice for Puppy Gideon: Amplify Sentences for Animal Cruelty
The Issue
Gideon, a helpless little puppy in Wayne County, Michigan, suffered horribly when he was gravely burned by two cruel-hearted women. This abhorrent act of animal cruelty is not an isolated incident, and sadly, the punitive measures for such misconduct are shockingly inadequate, leading to a continuing cycle of animal abuse and torture.
According to the Michigan Penal Code, animal cruelty, a felony, is presently punishable by a maximum sentence of up to 4 years imprisonment, $5,000 in fine, up to 500 hours of community service, or some combination thereof (Section 750.50b). However, these penalties often fail to suffice as suitable deterrence for heartless perpetrators.
In 2019, the FBI started collecting data on animal cruelty, highlighting its significance and the urgent need for stronger legal measures (FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System, 2016). Furthermore, the Humane Society states that animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people.
We believe that a heftier penalty for animal cruelty is not only a matter of justice for Gideon, but it is also a critical preventive measure that could put a stop to this ongoing cycle of violence. Animal cruelty should be taken seriously and be reflected in much harsher penalties than currently exist.
We seek your support in advocating for tougher laws and stricter penalties for animal cruelty offenders in Michigan. Please sign this petition to demand justice for Gideon and discourage such inhumane acts.
Together, let's give animals the protection they truly need and deserve. Let your signature be the voice they don't have.
