Secure Immediate Compassionate Release for Greg Hanna

The Issue

Greg Hanna, a good friend and valued member of our society, is currently serving consecutive sentences for misdemeanor crimes in the Shawnee County, Kansas jail. Greg is not just an inmate; he is a human being in dire need of empathy and support. The nature of his crime does not warrant the seriousness of the burden he now carries. Recently, Greg had to undergo an emergency tracheotomy due to complications from recurring throat cancer, a condition for which radiation is no longer an option. He has served the majority of his time, and if action is not taken to release him immediately, he will serve something far graver than a sentence- he will serve a death sentence. According to the ACLU, on any given day, there are over 3,000 people in U.S. prisons serving sentences for nonviolent crimes (ACLU, 2020). Greg is part of this statistic, but his case is unique given his dire health condition. His life hangs in balance. We cannot stand by and let a misdemeanor equate to a death penalty. We implore the relevant authorities to enact immediate humanitarian release for Greg Hanna. This isn't just about law, it is about compassion. Sign this petition. Let's help Greg have a fighting chance.
