On Tuesday, Russian media reported that Brittney Griner's pre-trial detention has been extended for at least another 18 days per "the request of the investigation."

Griner has been now been imprisoned in Russia for more than three months. She was detained on Feb. 17 -- accused of attempting to transport vape cartridges containing hashish oil through a Moscow airport.

The U.S. government on May 3 classified her case as a "wrongful detention."

This is the third time Griner has had her pre-trial detention extended, and the news comes one day after the Phoenix Mercury announced that members of the team had attended a meeting with a U.S. State Department representative while in Washington, D.C., ahead of a Tuesday night matchup with the Mystics.

The team additionally met with Arizona Congressman Greg Stanton and Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who like Griner, hails from Houston.

Stanton, who is leading bipartisan efforts in Congress to push for Griner's immediate release, said in a statement:

“For the team, coaches and executives at the Mercury, every day without Brittney is a lifetime. I was glad for the opportunity to share the work we’re doing in Congress to secure Brittney’s release.”

Vanessa Nygaard, the first-year head coach with the Mercury, also spoke on the matter. "We are on day 116 since BG has been wrongfully detained," Nygaard said.

"It was great to hear from the State Department that we should continue to amplify that message and that we should continue to press all those who have any influence or power to help bring BG home," Nygaard added. "She’s our teammate, she’s an American and we want her back home.”
