Reduce driving time behind the wheel to a maximum of 4.5 hours for bus drivers

The Issue

Our petition is to restrict the amount of time bus drivers spend behind the wheel to 4.5 hours at any one time during their working day.

As people are aware bus drivers carry the most important cargo in our lives, our family and friends, children and loved ones.  It is important that we realise, in today's modern society, that driving is no longer a pleasure but a chore and a refreshed, vibrant, coherent and alert driver will be safer and more effective in their role.

We therefore seek a change in GB domestic driving legislation that enforces today's passenger transport companies to operate no more than the 4.5 hours driving piece whilst carrying passengers.  To ensure this the answers are quite simple, allowing:

- 45 minutes minimum break between driving pieces of work

- 11 hours of rest between each day's work.

If these recommendations were accepted by the Department of Transport and put in to legislation, we believe there would be far less incidents involving public transport vehicles on UK roads and promote healthier drivers.

It is time to bring about change that allows bus drivers to enjoy the same health and safety at work rules that are enjoyed by lorry drivers and rail workers.
