Hi there, I wanted to thank you so much for supporting the petition I posted on Change.org on Wednesday last week. If you feel you can, then please do share this link with others, too. https://www.change.org/olderdrivers Since Wednesday, over 130,000 other people have also supported this petition. I’ve had lots of messages from people who have been directly affected by the impact of what I believe to be inadequate steps to ensure that potentially unsafe drivers are identified and helped off our roads. Until the law changes, however, family and friends often have to take responsibility to persuade those whom they believe to present a risk to themselves and others to stop driving. This can be very challenging and, from many of the stories I’ve been told, can cause relationship frictions. One supporter just got in touch to tell me that she accompanied her 72-year-old mother to a test centre to highlight the fact that she would be a danger on the roads if she continued driving. ‘As a result,’ she told me, ‘she doesn’t drive anymore. But she also doesn’t speak to me very much.’ This is another reason why I think the law must change. Some drivers don’t recognise when they have become a risk to others, and sometimes it can be difficult to persuade people to change long-standing behaviours (perhaps especially when you love them). A change in the law would help shift this dynamic to from personal to policy. In the meantime, if I can persuade even one person you might care about to think before they drive, then I thought it would be worthwhile to share a blog post I wrote on the matter around this time last year (please follow the link through to my blog). Thanks again. Ben
