Preservation of Old Buildings in Peshawar

The Issue

Peshawar is the capital of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. It is the biggest city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It is one of the oldest cities of Pakistan with a recorded history that dates back to 539 BC. Naturally as a consequence, the city is laden with historical buildings sporting beautiful architecture design. Unfortunately, some of these buildings have already been demolished while others are in a severely damaged state. These buildings are located across Peshawar, specially in Sadar and the main city area. Some of them are old abandoned houses, others are shops or just present as the upper portions of new constructions. A small attentive visit will easily draw your focus towards them.

Many major cities in the world are tourist hotspots because they have preserved their old buildings. These old buildings in Peshawar could be converted in to cafes, public libraries or simply sight seeing spots.

•Maintaining and saving old constructions attract tourists, specially people who like to experience the “spirit” of the city, which is seen through architecture. Also when old buildings attract tourists, it will definitely create more jobs for locals, and help in improving the economic prosperity of the city.

•With respect to culture, old buildings help us to understand the history that occurred before we were born and promotes the respect for those who lived in prior times and different traditions. Most of these buildings date to pre-partition era. Preservation of old monuments plays an important cultural role in cultivating pride of our heritage and past making us unique in the world.

Rome, Boston and Venice are few well known examples of what happens when we preserve our heritage. Not just big monuments but old houses, shops and all other big and small places in Peshawar should be preserved and restored.

•With respect to the environment, restoring old buildings is environmentally friendly. Preserving old buildings can be considered a form of recycling, which reduces construction waste, saves energy spent on manufacturing building materials, tools and equipment.
