New information from the US Department of Education which really helps SPS be a real contender!

Thanks to continued action by the Fort Lawton Coalition, we were able to have a great and informative discussion with the US Department of Education which revealed that there is great hope for SPS acquiring land at Fort Lawton. Here are the key points about Fort Lawton and the summary of my conversation with the DOE is attached: --SPS does not apply to the US Department of Education until they have become a part of the master re-development plan for Fort Lawton In order to be a part of the master re-development plan, SPS must ask to be on the EIS --The City and DOH are aware that SPS is re-considering their inclusion into Fort Lawton --We have a very short window to get back into the plan for Fort Lawton as the EIS is being finalized within weeks (or less) --The funding for a proposed site must be available at time of application --An interim use of the land is allowed and can include Athletic Fields (70% discount, Maintenance Facilities (80% discount), Admin sites (80% discount) --Funding for developing the land for interim use and the cost of land (if not 100% discounted) is due at time of application If a school is proposed at a future time, that funding has to be identified as a real and approved source of funding, but does not have to be in-hand at application --The exact grade levels served by school can be amended as long as it is active classroom space for either an initial or delayed implementation --Title transfer takes 2-10 years --This BRAC land from the Department of Defense through the Department of Education is a different process from the Federal Reserve Building --SPS is the only applicant for this land through the DOE, but must work with the City who is the master re-development authority for Fort Lawton Please continue to stay engaged! schoolboard@seattleschools.org tim.burgess@seattle.gov sally.bagshaw@seattle.gov info@jennyforseattle.com info@carymoonformayor.com
