Create Equitable North End Middle Schools for All Students
Create Equitable North End Middle Schools for All Students
The Issue
Take politics out of the classroom, and start putting education first...
Create Equitable NE Middle Schools
- To balance NE capacity and support successful long term planning, more students need to feed into JAMS from the current Eckstein service area. This can be accomplished by adding more elementary school feeders to JAMS, or creating a geographic boundary line (similar to SPS high schools). JAMS needs to grow beyond the district’s current proposal and Eckstein needs relief.
- In order to provide equitable education and programming, JAMS needs to open as a comprehensive neighborhood middle school in 2014 serving grades 6 - 8. We also need a planning and hiring committee to staff JAMS IMMEDIATELY.
- The district should not move APP students back into the already overcrowded NE middle schools in 2014. Seats are needed for the growing NE neighborhoods now. Short-term solutions without long-term planning creates unnecessary educational instability and community disruptions.
Minimize Student and Community Disruption
- Postpone drawing boundaries for the future Wilson Pacific Middle School until data can be accurately evaluated and appropriate APP placement can be determined. Take the time to do it right!
- Utilize Lincoln South as a temporary annex for Hamilton Middle School and keep the students under the proven leadership of Cindy Watters. Evaluate an APP geosplit or APP middle school move to Wilson Pacific in 2017 with accurate data and planning.
- Right size boundaries for ALL elementary schools to match their building capacity.
- Neighborhood, Special Ed, and ELL students MUST take priority over option programs when filling seats in our neighborhood schools.
