Speak Up Ballard
15 ago 2015
Seattle Times columnist Danny Westneat completely missed the point. Let's set him straight.
Danny is a smart guy and a terrific writer. He's also a powerful influence on elected officials. But he blew it with his column this mornig about Ballard's proposed homeless encampments. He bought into the tired old thinking that the mayor's office and homeless activists like to perpetuate that anyone who's raised concerns about the process of siting these encampments is just a NIMBY or anti-homeless.
We need you to take a minute and write Danny at dwestneat@seattletimes.com and tell him he got it wrong, and that Ballard is reacting negatively to the city's complete lack of transparency and collaboration with our community in siting a homeless encampment.
Here's one thing we respect about Danny: If enough readers point out an error, he'll revisit the issue -- which is more than we can say for our city officials so far in this process. Danny wasn't at the meeting, so he didn't hear the legitimate concerns and questions raised there about the mayor's refusal to have an open, transparent public process around the encampments. None of the comedy of errors that has occurred would have taken place if the mayior had engaged Ballard from the start instead of steamrolling us.
And that includes the latest debacle last week, when construction crews, under orders to rush the remediation of the Market Street site, cut off power to thousands of Ballard residents and businesses on Thursday. We can't think of a better metaphor for how this whole process has been designed to keep Ballard in the dark. Let's shine a little light on Danny's column this weekend. Email him and/or add your voice to the comments section after his column.
