Increase the time limit on online pop quizzes in GOV310L @ UT Austin

Increase the time limit on online pop quizzes in GOV310L @ UT Austin

The Issue

In Introduction to Government (GOV310L) at The University of Texas at Austin, students are given random 10 question pop-quizzes that are worth 50% of the final grade. As if the grade weight isn't stressful enough, students are given a 10 minute time limit to complete the quiz. That is one minute for the student to read and understand the question and look through all of his or her notes from lecture, lecture slides, and/or the online textbook, and ponder about the correct answer for each question. Some students suffer from immense pressure and anxiety under a time constraint which will negatively impact their grades and GPA. Even an increase of a couple minutes would make a drastic difference between a student achieving an C or an A on the quiz. The short time limit creates a stressful environment for students that often lead to guessing on some questions just to get to all 10. I guarantee an increase in time would make all students happier and calmer and you'd see a higher quiz average.
