As organizations recognize the importance and ongoing need for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts, an important aspect of the dialogue has been an examination of the impact language has on perpetuating damaging societal norms. This petition formally requests the role of Scrum Master be modernized by dropping the word "Master" in favor of a neutral alternative that doesn't make implications about power dynamics. Doing so requires change from the certifying bodies, Scrum Alliance​, Scaled Agile, and the maintainers of Scrum.org.

The need to retitle the role of Scrum Master has existed for some time and is even more necessary in light of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Doing so expresses empathy and acknowledges the experience of others while promoting equity and inclusivity, specifically in organizations that have chosen to adopt Scrum. As Scrum and Agile take pride in their ability to embrace change, it is more important than ever we express to Scrum.org, Scrum Alliance, and Scaled Agile the need to inspect and adapt the title Scrum Master to better reflect our shared values of openness, respect, and courage.
