Scripps National Spelling Bee: Add a High School Spelling Bee

The Issue

Hi, I'm Nejat! I'm 14 years old and have loved spelling since I was little. I need your help!

Last year, I made it to the National Spelling Bee competition in Washington, DC. To try to improve my finish, I fell short, and got second place at my regional spelling bee, last March. I know how hard it feels. How it feels to spell that last word, and know that it all ends here. Some you may be able to understand.

Eighth-grader spellers, all over the country, are ending their years, on a sad note. Why? Well, at the end, there can only be one winner. We are forced to drop our spelling lives once our year ends, and have to jump into a whole new atmosphere, high school. We need your help to let us keep spelling!

Having spelling bees end in eighth grade, leaves us on a cliff, with nothing to look forward to in high school. We would be forgotten of our spelling talents and all of our hard work would be thrown away.

Sports and other activities continue on into high school, why do spelling bees have to stop?

I think it's great that there are so many fun opportunities for kids in high school, and why not add spelling bees as a part of it? I bet fewer kids get hurt spelling than playing sports! (well, minus the stress and papercuts.) I just don't understand why Scripps is ignoring spellers like me, and that is why I started this campaign!

There needs to be a new type of competition brought to the table. There have been many other competitions and activities that have been revised and changed, so it isn't something that's never been done.

Sign and share this petition, as it will help spellers, like me, continue our love for spelling!

I'm thankful for auto correct and spell-check, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't have a competition for high school students who would love the challenge.

To all who have signed the petition: On behalf of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, this petition is certainly flattering! It’s great to see so many people who stand up to believe in the value our purpose: to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. With the limited resources we have, it's our intention to focus our program on elementary and middle school ages at this time. If at some point we decide to make a change we will certainly let you know. Thanks for your interest and thanks for being a fan of the Bee!
