The Issue

I'm writing to urgently address the need to scrap the proposed tax increase on private rental income from 20% to 24% in the UK. As someone deeply affected by this policy change, I call upon the government to reconsider its implications on both landlords and tenants.

The private rental sector is already struggling with historically high rent charges. An increase in taxes on rental income threatens the stability of this essential market. Many landlords will be forced to sell their properties, reducing the available housing stock and exacerbating the homelessness crisis. Others may respond by passing these additional costs onto tenants, spiraling rental prices further out of reach for thousands of families and individuals.

The ripple effects of this policy could be devastating. According to Shelter, there are already 277,000 people in the UK experiencing homelessness, including 126,000 children. This tax hike risks increasing these numbers drastically. Instead of asking landlords and tenants to bear this burden, the government should consider alternative means of generating revenue that do not disproportionately affect the most vulnerable.

Furthermore, the Institute of Fiscal Studies predicts that increasing rents will strip families of approximately £1,700 per year. For those barely making ends meet, this represents a bridge too far, pushing many individuals closer to poverty. In a time of economic uncertainty and rising living costs, the government must protect rather than burden its citizens.

Through targeted initiatives and rethinking budget allocations, the government can find a balanced approach to managing its finances while safeguarding the welfare of its people. Scrapping the increase on rental income taxes will not only keep rentals affordable but also ensure that more landlords remain in the market, keeping rental properties available.

Please sign this petition to urge policymakers to act responsibly and eliminate the proposed tax hike on private rental income before it's too late. Together, we can work towards a solution that maintains affordable housing and supports both landlords and tenants alike.
