In January of 2025, The State of New Jersey passed a bill suggesting a state wide cellphone ban in all schools. This is unreasonable, preventing schools from creating their own policies which benefit their student population, and restricts students from communicating when necessary. By allowing or requiring schools to seize student’s personal devices, they encourage 4th amendment violations of 1.3 million students. Schools will gain legal but unconstitutional rights to take student’s phones for no moral or ethical reason. If we want a truly fair government that represents equality and liberty, we must vote against this bill. If we act now, we will not play defense later on.
