Scrap GCSE Fees for Home-Educated Children — Fair Exams for All

Scrap GCSE Fees for Home-Educated Children — Fair Exams for All
The Issue
✍️ Petition Story: Fair Exams for All — Scrap GCSE Fees for Home-Educated Children
SheThrivesUK Trust is a grassroots, safeguarding-first initiative rooted in equity, empowerment, and faith-led community leadership. We stand with thousands of families across the UK who choose to home-educate their children — often for reasons of wellbeing, faith, inclusion, or unmet needs in mainstream education.
These families save the government over £10,000 per child, per year by not accessing state-funded school places. Yet when their children reach GCSE age, they are forced to pay £150–£300 per subject just to sit the same exams their peers take for free.
This is not just unfair — it’s a barrier to opportunity.
Many of our children are thriving academically, socially, and spiritually outside the school system. But without formal qualifications, their futures are limited. Parents already investing time, energy, and personal funds into education shouldn’t be punished with exam costs that price them out of accreditation.
We believe:
• Every child deserves access to qualifications — regardless of how they are educated
• Home educators should be recognised, not penalised, for saving public funds
• The Department for Education must fund GCSE entries for home-educated children
This petition is a call for justice, inclusion, and educational equity. It’s time to scrap these fees and ensure that every child — whether in school or at home — has a fair chance to succeed.
