#supportourgyms

Due to the recent announcement from our first minister gyms will remain closed until 14th September. This delay will now cause huge financial problems to many gyms across Scotland and some gyms may not re-open as a result. As the first minister has delayed the opening of the gyms I request the Scottish government to make a grant fund available to all gyms in Scotland. I understand the first minister might open the gyms earlier than 14th September but since lockdown the gym industry has received no financial backing. The gym industry has been completely forgotten about. On 7th May our industry was advised to make many changes to our clubs to prepare for re-opening. Many gym owners have spent thousands of pounds to make improvements to their clubs and now we have been told it will be another 6 weeks until we open. Most of the gyms in Scotland have received very little income as memberships have been frozen. The gyms still have to pay bills such as rent, water, electricity, hire of equipment, bank loans and many more.

Gyms in Scotland have made massive improvements in line with Scottish government guidelines such as a new booking system were members can book in for one hour at a time. This also helps with the new track and trace system as we know who is in our gyms every minute of the day. This system also limits the number of members in the club at any one time and prevents large group gatherings. Gyms have a grid system in place with 2m distance between each machine. Members must stay within the box and when they move to the next machine they follow a one way system. A rigorous cleaning schedule has been put in place were the clubs are deep cleaned every 3 hours and touch points are cleaned every 30 minutes. We have also purchased huge supplies of PPE for our members and staff. We welcome the first minister to visit our gym to show the changes and procedures in place.

The UK has the biggest obesity rate in Europe and keeping our gyms closed isn't helping at all! After nearly 5 months of lockdown people have eaten more than normal and exercise has been limited. We are also concerned about the mental health of many of our members. A gym is a place to escape and clear your mind. Exercise and structure have been proven several times to improve mental health and as this is the next expected national problem we feel the importance of this industry has been severely overlooked.

Please provide financial support to ensure gyms across Scotland are not forced to close. As every other industry has been supported financially or allowed to re-open much earlier than gyms we feel it is unreasonable to expect such a valuable industry to survive without any financial aid from the Scottish government. A grant to support gyms in re-opening would save many clubs and jobs not to mention our valued members who we hope to welcome back when it is finally allowed.

Gyms are essential to improve mental health and get the nation fit and healthy, please help us!
