Gillian Holmes started this petition to Scottish Government

Hey I'm Gillian and I am a child's activity provider operating in East Renfrewshire and have been doing so for the past 10yrs.

I love my job and I have a real passion for it, so when the changes in the guidelines were announced regarding the positive outcome for babies under 12mth as a result of Jude Mackay’s petition, , I was really delighted as it now meant under 12mths can attend in greater numbers, new mums can experience a bit of normality and businesses can operate on a more financially viable basis.

However, whilst this was a great first step in the right direction, it simply wasn’t good enough ..WHAT ABOUT OUR TODDLER ANS PRESCHOOLERS??

I see first- hand how important groups and classes have on a child's social skills and all-round development and cannot see the sense in the guideline which restricts their classes to 5 families which includes the class leaders aswell.

As a business like many others that is made up of a high percentage of 1- 5yr olds this decision has helped only slightly, if at all.    The pandemic has had an incredibly detrimental effect on the industry in particular the groups that were unable to transfer online.   The grim reality is that some may not survive and this would be devastating for the business owner, the community and the chidlren .

Groups for 1-5yrs form an important and essential part of the community providing a safe environment for parents/carers to take their children on a weekly basis, where they learn, play, grow, explore and socialise with their peers – ALL vitally important for the child’s social skills and development.

It's not just the children that benefit from the groups, they also provide a place for the parent/carer to go to each week, for them to make new friends, to share concerns, socialise, all aspects that have a positive impact on their own mental health and wellbeing.

SO, as disappointed as I am that the 1-5year olds have been forgotten, I am equally more determined to take a stance and fight for clearer guidance from the government for these children who are quite simply being denied the opportunity of attending their weekly groups.

It is essential that we keep the momentum going and petition to get the numbers increased so as to make classes financially viable for businesses, for the non-profit groups to return and to get our little people out in the community socialising once again.

WE NEED A FIX FOR ALL CHILDREN !!

I therefore plead with you all, if you are a parent/ carer of a toddler/preschooler or just want things to change, PLEASE SIGN and SHARE THIS PETITION.

Thanks so much in advance

Gillian Holmes
