Innocent Pitbulls, Japanese Tosa’s, Dogo Argentina’s, and Fila Brasileiro’s are the four types of breeds that are victims to the dangerous dog act of 1991. Even if these dogs have done nothing wrong, should they be suspected to fall under the dangerous dog category, then they are cruelly taken away from their owners and put under a 3 month investigation where the dog is in an unfamiliar environment with strange people where it could easily lash out which will result In the dog being euthanised.

If it is found to be a ‘dangerous’ dog then it will be destroyed. If when the investigation is carried out and it is found that the dog isn’t of a dangerous breed It is returned to its family. As good as this may sound, after 3 months of investigation with strange people and in an unfamiliar environment, it will be a traumatised and different dog. You will only get your dog back under certain conditions

It’s not only these four breeds that the dangerous dog act affects. There are horror stories from all over social media where someone’s family pet has been seized just because they look like one of the main four breeds. These are breeds like The American Bulldog, The Bullmastiff, The Cane Corso,   all of which can be easily mistaken for a Pitbull. As an owner of an American Bulldog, it would break my heart, if someone took my dog away, and she was examined like a lab rat.

If a Pitbull, or a dangerous dog attacks someone, it will be plastered all over the newspaper, and made very clear that this was a dangerous dog that had attacked someone. The media criminalises these types of dogs and tries to scare everyone into hating these breeds. However the media don’t talk about how many Dogs have died because of the law, but will happily talk about how many people have been injured from dog attacks. Only one side of the story is ever told.

The solution to this problem, that will save hundreds and thousands of innocent dogs lives is, Rather than banning and killing off the breed, Why don’t the government check and record who exactly is owning these dogs. Are they responsible enough to own this type of dog? Is the dog being subject to fighting? Is the dog being taken care of properly? What are the reason behind these attacks? Why don’t we ban irresponsible owners, rather than criminalising and wiping out the four whole breeds of innocent dogs. There is so many questions we should have asked before someone gets ownership of a dog, and when these questions don’t get asked, There is bound to be accidents because the dogs are not being taken care of correctly.

There should be a law that only allows certain people to take care of these types of dogs. There should be background checks on the potential owners. This will ensure other people’s safety, ensure the safety of the dog and as well as hopefully preventing a whole innocent breed from being wiped out in the UK.
