Alexander Burnett started this petition to Scottish Government

We are asking the Scottish Government to properly fund Aberdeenshire Council so that over 120 communities do not face being separated, following a report that showed over 60 bridges would need repaired by 2030, or they would face closure.

We, the undersigned, call on the Scottish Government to increase funding to our Council so that they can cover all Bridge Infrastructure Repairs in Aberdeenshire.

Aberdeenshire Council have estimated that it would cost £5.1M per annum over 20 years to fix the bridges– which equates to 364% of the current allocated budget.

As an example, Park Bridge was temporarily closed on the 19th February 2019, for residents to then find out that it would face permanent closure on 4th March 2019 – since then, local residents have been forced to make a 15 mile return detour with no solution given, due to the ever decreasing funds being made available to the local Council. This has separated the communities of Drumoak and Durris who have had this bridge connecting their two communities for nearly 170 years since it was first built in 1854.

The Scottish Government have been decreasing funding available to local Councils since 2007 and it is time they create a new fiscal framework for councils with an automatic amount to be transferred each year from the Scottish Government’s budget.

Between 2013-14 and 2019-20 local government funding fell by £276m in real terms.

This year, Scotland’s councils are facing a budget shortfall of £511 million as a result of the pandemic.

We support proposals to create a new fiscal framework for councils and call on the Scottish Government to increase funding to Aberdeenshire Council so that they can cover all Bridge Infrastructure Repairs in Aberdeenshire.
