Ban puppy mills in Wisconsin

I’m the devoted owner of two dogs and a cat, and a lifelong animal lover. As much as I love them, though, I know that large-scale commercial breeders should not be putting more pets into the world. There are too many already, and these “puppy mills” are notorious for their inhumane conditions and the sick puppies and kittens they produce for sale in pet stores.
Puppy mills provide local pet stores with about 500,000 puppies and kittens each year. Meanwhile, nearly 3 million are killed in shelters each year because they can’t find homes. This is not right. We need to focus on encouraging our communities to buy shelter pets rather than offering them these sickly alternatives from large-scale breeding operations.
Many cities and counties have banned the sale of commercially-bred dogs and cats. Let’s call on the Wisconsin legislature and Governor Scott Walker to make Wisconsin the first state to do the same. The move would be a big step in shutting down the puppy mill pipeline.
In the past five years, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Phoenix, and well over 100 more cities have banned the sale of these puppy mill pets. Illinois has been pushing to do so statewide, and Maine has even proposed to ban the sale of all dogs and cats in pet stores, so that people turn to shelters and humane societies to get their companion animals.
I want Wisconsin to lead the way in standing up for animal welfare. Let’s call on Governor Walker to ban the sale of puppy mill pets statewide now.
