Revoke Margaret Court's Order of Australia: No prizes for bigotry!

We are disgusted to hear that Margaret Court is due to be awarded the Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AC), the country's highest "honour".

Of course we do not support any of the nationalist celebrations that happen each year on Invasion Day. But it is a deliberate slap in the face to all LGBTI people to give this medal to one of Australia's most outspoken bigots.

Her track record of grotesque statements is long and worthy of scorn, not praise:

"Court has claimed “tennis is full of lesbians”, that transgender children were the work of “the devil”, and has told Christian radio that a “gay lobby” was trying to “get [into] the minds of children” through Australia’s Safe Schools anti-bullying program.
In the lead-up to Australia legalising same-sex marriage, Court publicly vowed she would stop using Qantas “where possible” in protest against its public support for marriage equality.
During the apartheid regime in South Africa, she said: ‘I love South Africa. They have the racial situation better organised than anyone else.’"

We demand to the Council of the Order of Australia, the Prime Minister, and the Governor-General that:

1. Margaret Court's Order of Australia be immediately revoked.
2. Margaret Court Arena in Victoria be renamed Evonne Goolagong Arena.

Rewarding this outrageous bigot is one component of a conservative backlash against the substantial progress made by LGBTI people and their supporters over the past 10 years. Sending the message that this bigotry is stridently opposed by the vast majority of the population is important to pushing back on the right's culture war.

  • The federal Liberal government still has a proposed "religious freedoms" bill in the top drawer that would legalise more discriminations against LGBTI people.
  • Mark Latham from One Nation, is attempting to pass a bill in NSW parliament that would completely ban any mention of transgender issues in school on pain of teachers and counsellors losing their jobs.
  • Recently, McIver's Ladies Baths in Coogee, provoked outrage when they stipulated that transgender women who had not undergone genital surgery would be barred from swimming in the pool
