By signing, you are supporting that Koalas be listed as an endangered Species and a National policy/strategic plan be put in place immediately, in collaboration with stakeholders (ie. Nat Parks; Wildlife facilities/rescue authorities, experts etc) to continue support / rehab of the rescued, but also ensure a sustainable release into the wild; regenerated habitat to release them; and established breeding program to protect their future. (See below).

Koalas, amongst other species, are our beloved National animal and icon. They have been in decline over years due to urban and commercial developments, culling and other human implications. In light of the previous months of unprecented bushfires/disasters, the threat of the species (and others) has come to the attention of our Nation and the World. Much of our population (& from across the Globe) have donated money, resources, time and felt our hearts break and felt helpless. Our beloved koala and the protection/future of the species, doesn't just need donations, it needs a Management Plan, supported by multi-stakeholders. Firstly, it needs the National Government to list the species as endangered & thus protected, including its habitat. The many wildlife hospitals/locations and carers, supported and ways/means for them to continue their work, under a collaborative approach. National Parks & Wildlife to be able to manage Parks and areas of wildlife, to count numbers and tag animals and monitor activity, particularly after the fires; specific extensions of Wildlife facilities to be extended (as per Australia Zoo recent announcement after their $1M donation, to a specialised hospital extension) that houses and rehabilitates the injured, and a planned/managed 'release to the wild program', with available 'protected habitats/locations' that are monitored, to enable animals to survive. Monitored breeding programs and continued ongoing education, resources and/or funding to enable sustainability of the future of our species.

Donating helps in the interim, but it doesn't if laws don't protect their habitat/culling, or prioritising this, if the Government can't pass laws to do so. This step and a National Strategic Plan that includes Governments (National; State; Local councils; Business; Wildlife Groups/Carers and Organisations and the Communities) to promote and adhere, with the sustainability of our cherished National icon at heart.

I am drafting a Plan to cc/ the Government/Wildlife groups, (working document) to start that process.. 

I want the petition to protect the species to go Global. I wish for the National Strategic Plan to further be collaborated across authorities to provide much needed input as we go forward.

The Strategic Plan to protect Koalas covers 3 key areas:

1. Government laws approved - to enlist Koalas as endangered, protecting them & their habitats (or potential habit, given much of this is recently burnt) & a plan for areas that can be considered, to be protected or regenerated.

2.A National plan including the strategies all stakeholders contribute to the 'preservation, sustainability and growth of the Koala populations, as a protected National icon/species'. Encompassing all tiers of Government support; Wildlife providers/carers/experts; National Parks; etc.

3.Funding to assist set up of a specialised 'breeding/development' plan and specialised facility / areas for habitual release (also protected and monitored) to support this important phase. Also, to take pressure off the wildlife facilities/hospitals and carers, for those animals already rescued. Potential location(s) TBC.
