Friends, on Tuesday, QLD-born Kopika dialled in to her virtual 5th birthday party all the way from Christmas Island, with her Mum’s mobile phone.
On Tuesday, my heart broke when I heard Kopika call out “I love you Grandma” to my friend Margot, who sang Happy Birthday to her from thousands of kilometres away.
Yesterday, I found out that Peter Dutton is trying to change the law so he can take mobile phones away from people like Priya and her family, who have come to Australia seeking peace and safety.
I was shocked when I heard Mr Dutton tell this blatant lie to the media: “Don't forget we don't have any children in detention.”
Without Priya’s mobile phone, most Australians would never know that Mr Dutton has kept QLD-born Kopika and Tharunicaa locked in detention for over two years.
We would never have seen what happened when Mr Dutton’s Border Force dragged Priya and her family onto a plane forced them into detention on Christmas Island.
With hope,
Angela
