Like all parents, I need to be confident that my baby is not sleeping on a bed made of harmful chemicals like PVC (vinyl), polyurethane (PU), PFAS, and flame retardants. But a recent study found most crib mattresses have one or more of these chemicals. On top of that, mattress companies are not telling us what’s in their products: 52% of surveyed companies did not disclose most or all of their materials.

Babies spend 16-18 hours a day sleeping. And most of that time, they are sleeping on crib mattresses with their faces resting directly on the sheet-covered mattress. As they sleep, they breathe deeply. Sometimes they sweat and sometimes they drool, increasing contact with their sleep surface. I want to know what my little one is sleeping on, breathing in, and possibly absorbing.

The Getting Ready for Baby campaign’s Clean and Healthy New York  and the Ecology Center surveyed 37 companies about 227 crib mattresses and tested 13 mattresses for harmful chemicals. [READ THE REPORT] Many crib mattresses had PVC (vinyl) covers, PU foam cores, and/ or PFAS waterproofing treatment. These chemicals are linked to cancer and other health concerns such as immune and thyroid problems and harm to brain development. Studies show they can be breathed in and even absorbed through the skin. Within the low-cost mattresses (less than $100) surveyed, 64% contain one or more chemicals of concern, such as PVC (vinyl), flame retardants, anti-microbials, and PFAS.

Sealy, one of the top crib mattresses manufacturers, sells mattresses with worrisome chemicals (like most companies). But, Sealy also makes 2 models (EverLiteTM 2-Stage crib mattress and Premier PostureTM 2-Stage crib mattress) for less than $100 without PVC (vinyl), PU foam, PFAS or added flame retardants.

I’m asking Sealy to make all of their mattresses out of healthier materials and to tell us what’s in all of their products.

We shouldn’t have to test mattresses to know what’s in them.
