Removal of the "Tertiary Transport Concession Cards" in favor of University ID's expiring yearly.

The issue

With the introduction of "Tertiary Transport Concession Cards" many legitimate students have been hit with $227 fines due the lack of organisation and poor planning on the behalf of the current Queensland State Government.

It is frustrating for us, as legitimate students to be fined, or see others fined, for the poor planning of a new system that was clearly not ready to be implemented.

A recent report by the ABC outlines situations where some students are having to resort to paying the full priced fair or risk getting slapped with a $227 fine because of clerical errors with their "TTCC" cards. This extra financial expenditure can hurt.

For instance, lets say a student travelling to QUT at Gardens Point in the Brisbane CBD lives at Southport, by translinks' map it is 14 "zones" of travel. 14 zones of student travel on-peak is $6.36 each way as a student. As an adult is $12.71. If a student has to travel to Brisbane 5 day a week for whatever reason, classes, work, work experiance, that is $63.60 extra they have to pay. With most students living on a few hundrew dollars a week at best, this could hurt a lot. Yes this is almost a worst case scenario, but it is still a likely scenario some students are facing.

Many students have received cards that have already expired, many more have not received their cards at all, in some instances even after submitting applications multiple times.

Mr. Scott Emerson, Mr. Campbell Newman, we ask you to consider the removal of the TTCC cards in favour of having university ID cards expire yearly or at the end of their degree, whichever occurs first. This practice already takes place in schools around Queensland.

The universities/institutes/tafes already possess the infrastructure and student records to ascertain the status of a student (full time or part time) and that information is already printed on ID cards. This process (to process and print a new student card) takes minutes for these institutes, where it takes weeks for the government.

We understand there is an issue with non-students, or "students in suits" as you have dubbed them, using student cards to abuse the lower fares, but there is ways of getting hold of a TTCC card, and if these people are determined enough, they will. But Legitimate stuents are now getting hit with fines because this system is not working.

Finally I am calling upon all legitimate students who have been hit with a fine because of this lack of proper planning on the behalf of the government to fight the fines, if you are a legitimate student, using a student go-card you have the right.

We are students, many students struggle to make ends meet on a day to day basis, stop using us as a revenue raiser.
