Schuman roundabout: for Brussels and for Europe, let's stop to this meaningless project

The Issue

Mister Rudi Vervoort, Minister-President of the Brussels-Capital Region,

On the 20th of November, the redevelopment of the Schuman roundabout is scheduled to begin.

Residents of the neighborhood, users, citizens, we urge you to stop this construction project, which will cause immense traffic problems and whose purpose we do not understand.

We believe that:

  • It is neither necessary nor justified to spend 25 million euros excluding VAT to redo a roundabout. This amount is astronomical and unacceptable in the current economic and social context.
    - If the roundabout were to be renovated, it should incorporate elements related to European symbolism. We regret the political choice of neutrality for the heart of Europe.
    - Plants in the ground should be preserved and not uprooted to be replaced by potted shrubs. This is a matter of ecological common sense.
    - It is essential that people who wish to protest in front of European institutions continue to do so.
    - Solutions must be found to ensure that motorised transit traffic is not shifted to residential and quiet streets but remains on major office routes.
    - The Parc du Cinquantenaire will be significantly affected by the change in the use of certain roadways
We appreciate your consideration of our petition.
