REMOVE “DOLPHIN RAPE CAVE” FROM THE HALLWAY ON THE 6TH FLOOR OF THE PHOTO BUILDING

REMOVE “DOLPHIN RAPE CAVE” FROM THE HALLWAY ON THE 6TH FLOOR OF THE PHOTO BUILDING
The Issue
(RAPE TRIGGER WARNING)
Due to strongly graphic and triggering images, we demand this photograph to be taken down. It is furthering the idea of rape culture and should not be displayed in a school building. This image could easily trigger any survivor of sexual assault. This building is supposed to be a safe place for students/staff and this piece does not reinforce that idea.
This piece pokes fun at one of the most traumatic experiences in a person’s life. There is a fine line between provocative art and being plainly distasteful. This is the most profound example of crossing that line.
This photograph furthers the idea of rape culture, that commodifies rape, that makes the horrific experience of rape into something to be appreciated. This is supposed to be an art installation. RAPE IS NOT ART, RAPE IS A CRIME.
This picture needs to be removed. And it needs to happen as soon as possible as to ensure safety in this building. A letter similar to this petition has been emailed to Stephen Frailey, the chair of photography at SVA. Rape culture needs to be stopped.
