Objection To Mandatory Minor For BCOMP Students At UofGuelph

The Issue

Currently if you are a BCOMP student at the University of Guelph, you are required to complete either an Area of Application (4.0 credits) or a Minor (5.0 credits).

NOTE: The following only applies to FUTURE students of UofGuelph, this won't impact any current students!
There is now a proposal to drop the Area of Application designation, in favour of a required Minor. This would mean that the number of available electives for BCOMP students would drop from a potential 4.75 credits to 3.75 credits.

I do agree that the Area of Application designation doesn’t provide much value outside of the University of Guelph itself, so I do think it’s a good idea that this designation is dissolved. However, I firmly believe that it is unreasonable to force any bachelor of computing student (Computer science or Software Engineering) to enroll in a minor.

The better solution (in my opinion) would be to have the minor be optional, and to allow any other students, who elect not to pursue a minor, to put these extra credits towards free electives of their choice. These free electives could be in the form of more CIS courses, or simply electives from other disciplines that are simply more broad than a minor would typically allow.

If this option is not on the table, then I believe it's best to leave the Area of Application in place, as it still allows students to take an extra 1.0 credits in the discipline of their choice.

More information into exactly why I personally believe it's unreasonable to require a minor for BCOMP, can be found in the following document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mBJU_o8U0RgbVqEXCm1cEiFXkFCeBgS2wZ4fngmeKpU/edit?usp=sharing

If you agree with the sentiment above, please sign this petition and if you can, come out to the Town Hall meeting on Monday, April 1, from 11:30 to 12:30 in the Reynolds building room 1101.

Thank you
