As we continue to call on the School District of Philadelphia to accept Racial Justice Organizing’s 10 Demands for Radical Education Transformation as well as Black Philly Students Alliance & Transforming Trauma & Violence Youth Demands and Masterman Charter; we also insist they discontinue their intention to move forward with the haphazard reopening plan which puts students, staff, and families at risk. Based on the condition of school buildings and the track record of the district, we have no confidence the necessary changes have been or will be made to provide non-toxic schools that are clean, free of pests, lead, asbestos, and safe for students.

Furthermore, not only is this plan not safe for staff and students, it also jeopardizes school communities around the city! The virtual academy places students with teachers they’ve never met or interacted with and separates teachers from their schools. Some teachers are even contemplating an early retirement as a result of this plan. In addition, Dr. Hite also has stated that “schools with high concentrations of children in online instruction will see losses in resources under his first version of the plan, with teaching and support staff needed for the cohort of fully virtual learners”. It is not lost on many of us that teachers are in a contract year and pulling teachers out of schools could be viewed as a strategic plan to undermine the Union’s bargaining ability.

Last night, families, students, principals, and educators were unified in their pleas that the district cannot keep students and staff safe and that school must be virtual in the fall. We understand the myriad needs of the student population and are happy to support the district in implementing some other methods to provide for students in this difficult time.

Philadelphia public schools must begin 100% virtually in the fall to ensure the safety of all involved!  If you agree with this statement, please sign the petition below calling for 100% virtual learning for the first half of the 2020/2021 school year.

In addition, please join us tomorrow, Saturday at 11am in front of 440 where we will make our voices heard. We will then proceed to Love Park for the Philadelphia Student Union’s action for Peace Not Police in our schools!
