Zoe Meletis started this petition to School District 57 Board of Education

Dear parents, teachers, SD 57 staff, Prince George neighbours, and friends,

Please consider signing this petition to demand that the SD 57 Board of Education  adopt a mandatory mask policy for all school-attending children (with medical exceptions).  This is an important step that must be taken NOW given that Northern Health recently (Jan. 6th) reported a positivity rate of 16.5% (https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/a6f23959a8b14bfa989e3cda29297ded

An all ages mandatory masking policy would allow our school district to join many others taking smart proactive actions such as this (e.g. 2 Calgary boards; a board in Halton; a board in Guelph; many boards across the country and elsewhere).  This policy would increase student, staff, and community safety by requiring that all school attending children in the district wear masks at school, including inside their classrooms (as we have heard from the PGDTA, CUPE, and the BCTF).

A mandatory mask policy across SD 57 would conform with and augment related COVID-19 guidelines and regulations, and would put school classrooms closer in line with other types of public and private spaces such as government buildings, retail environments, and restaurants.  It would also serve to reduce COVID-19-related anxiety among students, staff, teachers, administrators and families of all of these community members.

The World Health Organization recommends that in order to prevent COVID-19 transmission, all children over the age of 2.5 wear masks when in large numbers and when social distancing is not possible.  This is the case in SD57 classrooms.

Thank you for signing and sharing this petition; please share it widely and use the hashtag #maskupSD57.  We plan to share the results at the SD57 meeting on Jan. 26, 2021.

Let's show teachers, staff, students, and our greater community that we value their lives and health!
